At Supporting Survivors of Abuse and Brain Injury Through Research (SOAR), www.soarproject.ca, we’re people with purpose, coming together to change the narrative around intimate partner violence-caused brain injury (IPV-BI).

We are a registered charity and the only organization in Canada dedicated to IPV-BI. We explore the intersection of brain injury and intimate partner violence, educate members of the public and frontline workers to recognize and respond, and empower survivors to get the support and services they need to thrive.

The Role

In response to the growing demand for increased education on IPV-BI and the awareness generated through SOAR’s work, we are seeing more requests for training on this critical topic. This is an exciting professional development opportunity for advocates across diverse sectors to expand educational reach and enhance the ability of their peers to identify and address IPV-BI more effectively.

We seek individuals to become SOAR Knowledge Brokers (KBs) to deliver essential training to frontline workers in your community of practice to recognize and respond to IPV-BI. Using a Train-the-Trainer model, this role builds capacity within organizations and communities by delivering training, supporting learners, and ensuring consistent, evidence-informed practices on IPV-BI. 

You will be equipped with knowledge, materials, and tools to deliver evidence-informed IPV-BI training within your own community of practice, building sector-specific capacity as a trained SOAR Knowledge Broker.

Candidate Requirements

Who you are:

  • A subject matter expert ideally with a professional background in the gender-based violence (GBV) space, and/or deep care for the issue of IPV/GBV.
  • Have professional expertise/career experience in key sectors, such as: policing, justice, health care, law, paramedicine, child protection, and social services.
  • Work part-time, are recently retired, and/or have a flexible schedule and the time to commit to undertaking both training and workshop delivery.
  • Are very comfortable presenting and public speaking.
  • Have a deep understanding of trauma-informed practice, or be willing to undertake learning.

Key Commitments and Compensation

This is a contract position. As an independent contractor, the Knowledge Broker will be entirely responsible for their own professional business costs, including income taxes, government remittances, and benefits.

Expectations & Time Commitment:

Between September 2026 – March 2027: 

  • Participate in 2-3 online training meetings (~4 hours each, including pre-reading) for background and introductory content.
  • Attend a three-day in-person training intensive. 
  • Attend a one-day in-person wrap-up symposium with sector-wide knowledge brokers.
  • Participate in the evaluation of the training program and process.

Compensation: $125 CAD/hour for facilitation time, travel time, and preparation time (pre-reading, for example). All required travel and accommodation for training events will be covered by SOAR. Trainings led by SOAR Knowledge Brokers beyond the timeframe outlined above will receive the $125/hour for facilitation time.

Upon successful completion of the training program, Knowledge Brokers will have all the tools necessary to facilitate their own sector-specific comprehensive workshops on a national scale on behalf of, and with support from SOAR.

As a SOAR Knowledge Broker, you will be equipped to:

  • Deliver engaging training sessions using presentation materials and trauma-informed practices
  • Facilitate group discussions, interactive activities, and reflective learning exercises
  • Lead Q&A sessions to reinforce understanding and application of content
  • Adapt training delivery to suit audience needs, time constraints, and group dynamics
  • Interpret and communicate complex information into accessible, practical content
  • Support participants in applying knowledge within their organizational or community contexts
  • Create inclusive, safe, and engaging learning environments
  • Encourage participation through questions, storytelling, and discussion
  • Build trust and rapport with diverse audiences
  • Support the expansion of training reach within communities and regions
